The writing is excellent. The show is pretty much a hoot, start to finish, just like Sophie Tucker. It’s full of great moments and ballsy jokes that still play today, and the performance is fantastic.
What I didn't like
I was curious to see images of Sophie Tucker and the people in her life that are part of the narrative — a true measure of how interesting and impactful the story is. I went home and did some research online. This show definitely leaves an impression. Sophie Tucker was and still IS an unforgettable character.
My overall impression
Well-written and VERY funny. The show moves at a clip and the audience laughs the entire time. Laural Meade brings to life a legend from another time with material that is relevant, interesting and actually deeply moving. Excellent writing, great songs, a really fun night of theater. The show is really intimate but it could easily be on a bigger stage because it deserves much bigger audiences. People will love it. This is an amazing tribute to a woman who has inspired comedy for decades. Somebody invite Bette Midler!!
