Though structured as a solo show, it delivers a powerful twist through the unexpected emergence of another identity. A truly rewarding surprise.
What I didn't like
I was seated in the front row, where the lighting occasionally shone directly into my eyes, making a few scenes somewhat difficult to watch. I’m not sure if this was an intentional effect, but it’s likely something that wouldn’t affect those seated further back.
My overall impression
And Her Children offers a compelling and skillfully crafted theatrical experience—one that stands out among this year’s Fringe offerings. From the moment the audience enters the space, the production demonstrates a strong command of sound and lighting design, creating a cohesive and immersive environment. At its center is Hailey McAfee, whose performance is both richly textured and strikingly poised, grounding the work with emotional precision.
Drawing inspiration from Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, the piece engages with the anti-war tradition while reframing its concerns through the lens of contemporary gun violence. The result is a haunting meditation on moral contradiction and maternal identity, set against a socio-political backdrop that feels all too immediate.
This is a work that asks difficult questions and does so with clarity, technical finesse, and a deep sense of purpose. Thought-provoking and resonant, And Her Children is a standout production that deserves serious attention at this year’s Hollywood Fringe.
