The nuanced shifting of the “to whom? for whom?” of Hailey’s commanding Anna Fierling, supported with Russell Chow’s subtle, clear lighting design, culminated in a flavorful combination of clear, through-line storytelling and the accompanying, incisive, episodic ticks and shifts that I love from the original Brecht.
This piece, in this space, with Ilana holding a fascinating presence throughout, for me, was a perfect marriage of space, scope, detail, and sharp gesture.
What I didn't like
Although we became aware that there were issues with sound in this particular performance, the adjustments made by the Hailey, Ilana, Rosie, and the crew left no feeling of something missing, and brought an edge to the performance that I’m so grateful I got to experience.
My overall impression
Blisteringly effective, this modern take on Mother Courage is a fascinating character study.
Being familiar with the work of many members of this cast and creative team, “ANDHERCHILDREN” is, to me, a shining example of a shared calling card: honor and homage to theatrical icons without being too sacred, and white-hot, hyper-relevant performative takes on what matters now.
All the flavors, portion size, and craft are here. Hailey, Rosie, Ilana, Padra, Russell, Abi, and Mallory have served an amazingly balanced, flavorful take on a classic that lingers well after.
