The staging was simple and the acting was phenomenal. It made it easy to connect with the character and the show as a whole. Veronica is an incredible writer and actress, and she truly brings this show the power and the unhinged-ness (is that a word? It is now) that a story like this requires. The direction is true-to-form Karp, and I think the mix of those two plus Soda makes for a powerhouse trio that can create an authentic and wonderful experience. And the bonus voices were also very wonderful, and felt like they couldn’t have been better if they were on stage with her.
What I didn't like
I almost wish there was a third consistent place to go to. I think that partially came from the limited space of the theatre, but it seemed almost too tight between the two main spots. The laundry pile did a good job of adding a third space, but part of it felt too loose? I think I’m picturing a third firm and physical location. But maybe I’m wrong, I often am. Maybe what was set was perfect and adding more would’ve made it worse.
Also, I am biased, and this is such a nothing burger, but part of me wanted a liiiiiiiiiiiiiitle more to do with the lights. But again, totally biased.
My overall impression
A hilarious and frankly insane take on being a woman in a world that just isn’t built for women. The story is raw and intense in a way that reminds you of why dark comedies are so hilarious. It’s simple and so well executed, it will have you questioning the sanity of everybody involved in the show, including you and every other person in that audience. And of course, it’s relatable as hell. Though that’s something you’ll probably need to discuss with your therapist at your next session.
