I appreciated the added detail, particularly the interrogation of Echo, the way she is the sole witness, and how the class differences between characters were portrayed more naturally this time. There were also many other elements I liked, though I can’t recall all of them off the top of my head.
What I didn't like
This was my second time watching this play, and because of this, I felt like I was judging Ray the whole time. I don’t know if it’s because the character is missing more depth that I can relate to (it’s also ok to have a flawed human being if that’s the intention), or if it’s simply that a second viewing doesn’t work as well for me.
Also, I sit in the second row this time, and I have to say I missed quite a bit of the action that took place on the floor. I imagine it would have been even harder to see for those sitting further back.
My overall impression
This is my second time watching the play. Compared to when I saw it at UCLA, this version felt much more detailed, and the story became clearer. I remembered it as a show that required me to piece together the storyline through the time shifts, which made it especially interesting and engaging. Naturally, that element of discovery was lost on a second viewing, and I’m not sure my review can fully do it justice. I do wonder, though, if someone were seeing this version for the first time, with all the added clarity and detail, would the sense of misty lesbian tension still come through?
