What I liked
The performance is extremely engaging, with injections of unexpected humor. I also love the commitment to making this an experience, with recommended reading/watching provided in the pre-show email. The programs add to the whole experience too, with paragraphs of research attached to every song.
I like the plain display of facts, with commentary being provided in the delivery of the experience rather than direct explicit opinions (until the end, when we wanted them).
What I didn't like
I would watch a longer version of this, potentially with more performance elements in the same vein as the raps. I especially enjoyed the use of physical movement throughout and would love to see more of that!
My overall impression
An absolutely insane experience that brought me to delirium and then sober reality. The mix of live original raps (which are largely about personal life experiences) with a backdrop of…well…the horrors of the world, perfectly encapsulated what it is like to have your brain split in two halves. The half that is terrified of the world ending, knowing it will, and the half that is focused on everyday experiences and views the self as the main character. Both halves are true and necessary. This experience showed that dichotomy better than most because you FELT what it’s like.
I’ve been down the rabbit hole of how nuts this world is, and this show embodies exactly what it is like to go down that road, and encourages you to go further.
