The show’s main message was surprisingly profound and tearjerking, and I love the way it was juxtaposed with abstract theatricality and light-hearted fun. The whole experience was supremely well written and directed.
What I didn't like
Not a problem, but an observation: there were moments where I found the elements set in the past even more compelling than the court room/present and I think it’s because that’s where the show’s central theme really shines through. I wanted even more exploration of that main message because it’s so complex and thought provoking.
My overall impression
Dog of Carnage is a delightful yet tragic play that unpacks complex issues with light-hearted comedy. The core charm of the play comes from watching the actors play verbal tennis, and it’s amazing how often you switch who you are rooting for throughout the show. The actors do a phenomenal job embodying the script’s quick beat shifts from tender to funny to chaotic, and the story has a shocking number of unexpected twists and turns. It was a 60 minute theatrical treasure!
