I really love the premise. It’s about Mia’s tapeworm taking over their life and now, their show. I find that tension is one of the most difficult things to achieve onstage but Mia and Nicholas find a maintain beautiful dramatic tension while tickling us with funny writing and physical antics. This show really embodies the spirit of fringe. It’s ambitious, hand-made by a team of lovely people, and full of really personal details. I appreciate that this story about the body is done with a sense of humor. The live flute and saxophone add a nice layer of theatricality and that giant worm… come on. It’s incredible.
What I didn't like
Maybe in Squirm Part 2, years and years have passed. Squirm is old and grey and Mia is with someone new but they happen to catch eyes at this University. They start chatting about how young and stupid they were and for one last time, Squirm says “you call me by your name and I’ll call you by mine…”
My overall impression
Squirm is a two hander puppet/solo show with a live saxophone/flutist. Mia tells the story of their experience having a tape worm (played by Nicholas Hemerling). The two have such playful chemistry and they sing original songs written by Mia. It’s heartwarming and unique and full of surprises.
