It is refreshing to see a strong romcom with a modern twist, and the writing brings a fresh angle on the Harry-met-Sally dilemma (the lead has a strong resemblance to Meg Ryan in her heyday!). This id also exceptionally well-cast, and clearly very well rehearsed with tight timing and great choices from all four actors.
Above all, it felt like a great reward seeing such a strongly-written piece that takes you through a story, watching characters overcome a big obstacle and grow as humans…and finally leaving us with a happy Hollywood ending. Five stars!
What I didn't like
It needs to be made into a movie!
My overall impression
This is the best writing and best direction I’ve seen so far during the fringe. The Road Theory it’s a terrific ensemble piece that brings together four very well-written characters, and actors who deliver excellent performances. There is some very good stagecraft that makes great use of the black box theatre space in the Hobgoblin, not to mention a set that is especially impressive for fringe! The play has a strong character arc and dramatic tension, and I would love to see it shot as an independent movie-it brings a new take on the classic romcom.
