This is a very special play, which can easily drift into caricature if not presented well. In this production the acting, the direction, the set, and the nuanced lighting and sound cues all created a world that felt very real and organic. I was transported to a place where I could feel the play’s message move through me in a surprisingly real way. This play was an example of how powerful theater can be even on a small scale.
What I didn't like
The energy in the small theater was electric; I wish the production can move to an even bigger venue; I’m sure not would sell out!
My overall impression
Watching “Dolores” was a deeply moving experience for me. Mr. Bakers script is raw, and exposes familial trauma in a very real and provocative way. Devonna Dehay’s Dolores is a severely wounded person who lives with courage, humor and incredible human spirit. Deedee Woche’s Sandra evokes the quiet desperation of people just trying to get by, until she is overcome with realization that love is all that matters in the end. Protecting the fragility of real love forged by fire is essential to our collective existence. Powerful stuff, which landed every note under Stephanie Feury’s direction in a beautifully crafted, intimate stage setting. Highly recommend going to see this production before it’s gone!
