The uniqueness of this idea cannot be emphasized enough. This could only come from the brilliant mind of Emily Maverick. I also appreciate that she portrays an unravelling of the spirit (which, in life, is a terrifying experience), and she does so with love and care. Emily is an ambitious creator, tackling complex themes, and doing it with a spirit of play. I love the absurdity, the snow bunny/Burning Man/alien-core aesthetic, Emily’s sensitivity as a performer (someone came in late and she used her powers to guide them to their seat), the videos being projected onto the white curtain, and this ridiculous flute-playing lover “Bobby”.
What I didn't like
I had this idea while watching Emily take off these gorgeous arm pieces during the show. it would be cool if you had some sculptural set pieces for your costume pieces and props to lay upon. This could add to the dreamy aesthetic and magical reality. Oh and I loved the repurposing of the snow and the magical earmuffs.
My overall impression
What I love about Slurt is that it can be about so many things. For me, it’s about seeking connection, getting burned by that connection, going feral at the club, losing yourself, burning out, healing yourself, then healing others. I think it’s also about losing your magic and then finding it again.
