The fake language of Slürt felt so authentic and grounded. Making up nonsense in an improvisational situation is harder than it looks, but it felt like there were enough touchstones to make it feel real. The audience engagement was thoughtfully arranged, from Slürt’s ability to move light/audience members, to the selection of her flute lover.
What I didn't like
The only thing that really comes to mind is that the karaoke song during Slürt’s descent into alcohol/cocaine/dance party abuse should be a torch song rather than Britney Spears? Something like “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Maybe “oops” is intended as a kind of empowering, taking-her-power-back kind of song. But it felt like an aside rather than a fuel of her madness.
My overall impression
Slürt is a fish-out-of-water story about an impressionable young stranger. Like all good clown shows, its vulnerability is its strength, a great showcase for Emily Maverick and a funny and touching narrative.
