The choreography in this show is INSANE. The differing powerpoint cues depending on who’s talking was brilliant. And i really enjoyed how cohesive this show was. A 5-man solo show is a wild concept but Drew created something special here. The cast all have amazing chemistry with one another and i feel like they’re all pretty distinctly themselves while still maintaining a singular consciousness. Sometimes when you’re at work you need to be the no-fun girlboss who gets the job done. Sometimes you wanna be the party animal who does acid in edm concerts and treats the lightshow like puppet strings. And other times, you need to be the romantic with a soft heart who wants love. Etc. This play captures a very distinct absurdist surreal vibe. Kinda like that one episode of the Twilight Zone “Five Strangers in search of an Exit.” Everything from the acting to the dialogue just works. Definitely a show i recommend.
What I didn't like
Ok so this show is great in alot of ways. If i HAD to give it some notes it would be that this show needs more lighting cues. Each character has a certain color scheme that makes it easy to separate, however, i wanted the theme to be stronger. I would’ve appreciated if when each character gives a monologue the light shining on them matched their color scheme. Im a huge lighting person, i love when lights play into a show. And it just seemed like a missed opportunity to not give each character their own colorful spotlight when they were giving their own monologue.
My overall impression
If Inside Out was made for Grown Ups that party on the weekends. This play was a cohesive, well choreographed 5-person 1-man show all about the different aspects of ourselves. The person we need to be at times and how we need to sorta shut off parts of ourselves to survive. But without fully relinquishing those parts about ourselves that we love. This was a fantastic show that really pushes that left me oddly nostalgic for all the parts of myself i lost along the way towards “growing up”
