This play is quite hilarious and all of the actors had a masterful sense of comedic timing. I laughed out loud at least 25 times.
I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the actors voices. Even though the play is largely comedic in tone, each actor had such a sonorous voice that felt like such a bonus in a play with this type of tone. The actors seamlessly jumped from comedy to sincere musical numbers, which just heightened my enjoyment of the entire piece.
The stage direction was also terrific. I was impressed how much choreography the play included in terms of the actors blocking during the musical performances. In one number, I loved when all the actors were carefully placed at certain positions on the stage to all sudden sing the a climax in the song.
The theatre’s smaller setting actually bolsters the vibe of the piece, as the intimate setting provides for an immersive experience with the actors. And all of the actors were clearly having so much fun with the material.
What I didn't like
The only note I have is merely technical, as the backing track for the music felt softer than necessary. This is an easy fix. The actors sang beautifully, and I encourage the directors and the tech team to jack up the volume at future performances to ensure that the audience can really hear and FEEL the music.
My overall impression
This was a fantastic musical from playwrights Sophie Gillet and Jacob Menke. Loved the intentionally irreverent tone and the sharp, witty humor. The performances were outstanding, with each actor bringing their A-game and fully subsuming themselves in the role. Plus the music was on point and I found myself humming the songs along with the characters. Sophie and Jacob have truly delivered something original here and I’m very excited to see what they do next.
