What I liked
The writing was a highlight for me here. Clever, insightful, and warm, Jessica Abrams’ words surrounding female relationships & middle age self-reflection land with wisdom & clarity without feeling preachy or over worked.
Also—the cast. Every member absolutely brought their A game with believability, timing, and chemistry. Kudos to all involved!
What I didn't like
Abrams’ play leans heavy on words which are clearly a strength for her. She is a skilled manipulator of language. But I think there could be room for expanding on the action oriented tension & conflict against her main character. What is standing in her way? What does she want to accomplish by the end of the show? What does she do to fulfill that desire?
My overall impression
“The First to Know” is a heartfelt, compelling, and smart piece of writing/performance! From its fun & unique premise to its genuinely talented & hilarious cast, the show is a gorgeous example of minimalist theater craftswomanship. Highly, highly recommend!
