Innovative concept and direction. Super clean physical chaos. Specific, complicated characters who were fighting for what they wanted. And Hilarious! This farce is a hit. The play felt lived-in, the plot was surprising, and I left the theatre with of sense of "hell yeah, this is what it's all about".
Not a weak element or link in the chain. Bravo!...

A great concept with an amazing execution. The show goes a mile a minute and doesn't slow down. An incredibly impressive amount of energy throughout the whole show. An absolutely fantastic, frantic piece of art....

What a delight! This silly farce is so so smart - even all the puns and sex jokes. It's just such a good idea to have us see what the characters cannot. The age-old gimmick of we-know-something-they-don't-know blown up and reimagined. Neil Simon would be proud!
Deft writing and direction - obviously the team is super theater-literate because you don't see a lot of farces these days and there's such a specific rhythm and way of introducing absolutely absurd, impossible nonsense that gets audience buy-in, and trust we: we were all on board the whole time!
The first half of the play, Andrew Puente doesn't say a word, but the facial expressions and clowning and choreography are so thoughtful and specific that I think he got the heartiest l...

What Happens In The Dark is a true reminder that Farce in Los Angeles is a lost art and needs to be done in this city much more than it is! While being one of the best Farces I've seen in years, this show and it's writing also brings home a personal story with a lot of heart - leaving you laughing and feeling for the characters at every turn. The entire cast and crew needs to take this show for a long run and give this show a long life outside of festivals: What Happens In The Dark could be what revives the modern day theatrical Farce. ...

Listen, I've been a part of the HFF community for over a decade. And let me say... WOW! Just WOW. I want to see it again, on a larger stage. It deserves a tour. This is like "The Play That Goes Wrong" levels of good - it's not just a gag of light/dark, it's a true metaphorical exploration of what light and darkness sheds on strained relationships and the secrets we keep. It's so flipping good! The direction, the props, the ACTING (my god, the acting?! It was incredible!), the commitment, the hilarity, the comedy, the twists, the turns... Highest recommendation. One of the best concepts, executions, directions, and performances I've seen at HFF!...

As soon as I heard the description of What Happens in the Dark, I knew that I would have to see it and, boy howdy, did it deliver. A true farcical delight! This show is so clearly produced and performed by people who love what they are doing. The artistry of how they used the lighting (in reverse) continued to charm me throughout the show and they explored so many different devices to play with the concept. The acting was superb. The physical comedy was a spectacle. I was gasping and laughing and gasp-laughing....

Poignant, hilarious, and creative. Wonderful job of establishing the "rules" of this production with the inverted lighting from the start - Our entry point is a silly farce that ends up that seems like it's all going to be played for laughs until the theme starts to creep its way into the story. Only in retrospect, we see that every choice is intentional, playing into its thoughtful message about navigating sexual identity, despite being in a committed relationship. It's these character arcs that bring meaning to the play, which is driven home by the zippy directing and honest performances. I should mention the impressive set dressing, which clearly took an organized team to load in/out during the small window. This team goes all out on this...

What Happens in the Dark is a bold, unforgettable experience—both wildly entertaining and quietly profound. I was completely hooked from start to finish, laughing out loud while holding my breath through the chaos. Its inventive use of light turns disorder into pure brilliance, but beneath the comedy lies something strikingly human. Every stumble, every twist, reveals deeper truths about identity, love, and what we hide in the dark. It’s sharp, fearless, and pulsing with life. This is theatre that dares to be different—and absolutely delivers....
