What I liked
The set is genuinely so impressive. From the first moment I walked into the space, I knew I was in for a wild ride. I cannot fathom that this set can be loaded in and set up in just 10 minutes. I bow down to you!
In terms of acting and story I think Brandon Caraco stood out as an excellent and grounded foil to the frenetic energy of the show. And the surprise love story that unfolds is an absolute highlight.
What I didn't like
Okay, so I had an idea related to this show that i wanted to share. Of course take it or leave it. I was watching the main character struggle to juggle her life and I was thinking, “why does this feel so relatable?” and I think it’s because largely that is what we all have to do to scrape by in this brutal capitalist world. I think everyone I know has to juggle multiple jobs and their personal life just to afford a basic quality of life. What if instead of being wildly rich and successful the joke was that she has to have clones just to scrape by? And then it could be a commentary on the juggling we all have to do to keep our own lives in check in an intense and crumbling economy.
My overall impression
With a set comprised of 6 full sized doors and a large cast of 9 actors, The Key to Success is one of the most ambitious shows I’ve seen at Hollywood Fringe. The show is a classic farce as a woman tries (and fails) to control the chaos unfolding around her. The script features joke after joke, keeps you on your toes, and has a very funny central premise.
