Oh, to be a fly on the wall in a sex store off the highway. Who comes in and the moments they share may surprise you. A 90-min play about intimacy, human connection, and vibrators.
Is it cheating if the intimacy is only emotional? What if the takeaways from the fleeting connection serve to enhance the primary relationship? What even is sex or romance really anyway? This play takes advantage of its unexpected setting, a sex shop, in many ways to make us ponder these and other questions.
Playwright Gina Femia acknowledges the preconceived notions and taboos around sex stores by providing us with one main character, Kevin, who is of this world and one, Beth, who is overwhelmed by it. The play uses the sexual nature of the place to blur the lines between sexuality, romance, and friendship. Over the course of several months, Beth is drawn to visit Kevin at his store, partially due to the thrill of doing something you know you’re not supposed to. Though she and Kevin are both married, we spend the entire play waiting for their relationship to turn toward romance or sexual fervor. Ultimately, we’re left deciphering how to label these two. This play is about how intimacy takes on many forms and can find us in the most unlikely of places; unnamed and short-lived relationships can be some of the most impactful. All this, while surrounded by vibrators and dildos.
