I enjoyed Anne’s stylistic range. Some songs were pop, some were punk, others rock ‘n’ roll. Very eclectic! I especially liked the ballad she sung later in the show because I could savor the words at a slower pace. Slso, I loved the video montages of pop culture from each year in which she told a story. It was cool to see the passage of time throughout her life expressed in movie and TV clips. And the juxtapositions between her setbacks and the romantic video was interesting. Altogether, I really admire how much work and thought went into creating this production. It’s very creative and Deegie really puts herself ‘out there’ – honest and real. And, I especially enjoyed the ending, how she physically pulled the plug on all this chaos in her love life.
What I didn't like
While the performance was energized, there were mic and sound issues that distracted from the story and hearing all the lyrics. Perhaps a better mic wired on the cheek may help. The guitar player and drummer were impressive, but far too loud in the mix of audio levels. They should be mixed lower on their amp, and the singing should be most prominent. A few times, Anne crossed from the bed downstage left to the keyboard and she was in the dark. Maybe that was a function of the space and its lighting limitations. A few other things made me ponder … Like I’m not sure why one boyfriend was “Eric #1”. I expected an “Eric #2” to show up??
My overall impression
Very creative concept for a musical! Deegie has such a great stage presence, a powerful voice and impressive comic timing. And the multi-media experience on the upstage wall was polished, professional and intriguing.
