I enjoyed the humor and talking about the type of exes (many of us) have had. Very relatable. She even dives into sexual assault, how that doesn’t always look like an act of aggression and how excuses get made for the behavior because it doesn’t fit that aggressive narrative. I really related to that.
I loved the message of learning to deprogram from the narrative girls/women should just have the goals of just becoming wives/mothers. That so many of us put ourselves into situations and relationships not for necessarily love but because we think we need to because of social/personal expectations, pop culture, family, etc. I related to many of her experiences in my own life journey. Being a wife/mother can be a wonderful thing! But it’s not for everyone and girls/women can offer more than just that. Deegie’s message rings clear by the end when she embraces her own power as an individual, declaring her own self worth and independence.
The music was great! The band rocked and Deegie has a powerful voice, both singing and with her message.
What I didn't like
Unfortunately there were some sound/tech issues during this performance. As a fellow performer you always want the shows to go smoothly, but live shows…that doesn’t always happen. Deegie and her band handled it with professionalism and grace. The show was still fantastic and that speaks to the quality of the show material/content wise but also to her and her band! I know they gained a fan in me from this show!
My overall impression
EXES: THEMUSICAL was entertaining from start to finish! Deegie gave a strong performance full of energy and passion. The music was amazing! Her band was killer! Visually it was neat with all the monitors playing nostalgic videos/audios. A professional and well done show!
