trans mom vs. family court: justice sees no gender

What I liked

Rejyna’s storytelling was very moving from the beginning. She made a great case for the strength of her character, particularly in the face of eviction and job loss while entering into this legal juggernaut alone. Her studying of law books while living in a car, on top of these stresses, is beyond inspiring. The last segment, in which she recalls having found her long-lost diary in which her past self asks her future self how she did as a mom, followed by a recorded testimony from her grown daughter affirming that she indeed was a tremendous success as a mom provided a complete validation of all the arguments she made in court about being worthy of joint custody.

There are people I’ve known in my life about whom I’ve said that what they fought through would have crushed me. I am adding Rejyna to that list.

What I didn't like

I would have liked the stage lighting to be dimmed during projections; it was causing them to look somewhat washed out.

My overall impression

This is a very important work, with a message that is so essential to our times. We are assaulted daily with misinformation and untruths, much of which is intended to scapegoat specific groups in order distract from the harm being done by the true perpetrators of injustice; the powerful who have turned our government into a tool for their own enrichment at the expense of the less powerful. Even though the story took place decades prior to the current turmoil, the telling of it could not happen at a more necessary moment, and its relevance to today’s reality is undeniable.
