MICHAEL SPELLMAN certified reviewer June 09, 2025
Sweet Air is a beautifully understated, hour-long gem about a platonic meet-cute between two strangers on a New York subway. Thoughtfully written and perfectly paced, it captures the quiet intensity of human connection in the most unexpected places. Katie Oliver’s direction makes masterful use of the bare-bones black box setting, allowing her actors to shine without distraction. This show is Intimate, grounded, and quietly moving… a definite standout at this year’s Hollywood Fringe. ... full review

Sweet Air is a gentle triumph—an hour-long ode to the strange, electric tenderness of human connection. On a quiet subway platform, two strangers meet, and what unfolds is funny, awkward, honest, and quietly profound. Matt Morillo’s writing is crisp and revealing, never forced. Katie Oliver’s direction is a standout—she transforms the black box into a vivid, suspended world, guiding her actors with precision and heart. There’s nothing showy here, just masterful restraint and deep trust in the story. Newton Mayenge and Jenni Chiramonte deliver pitch-perfect performances, filled with nuance, rhythm, and undeniable chemistry. In a sea of noise, Sweet Air is a breath worth taking. ... full review

Sweet Air is a beautifully written, witty, deeply touching story of connection. A simple black box stage is transformed into a New York subway station where two forlorn people wait for a Godot-like subway train on a lonely Valentine's night. What passes between them is both funny and memorable. This play is well acted, well directed and highly enjoyable. See it!... full review

Sweet Air is a sweet breath of theater in its purist form. Set in NYC’s subway station, director Katie Oliver takes us on a beautiful and enthralling journey of first meets. Her direction allowed me to sit back and enjoy the art of conversation, and growing relationship between two lonely misunderstood strangers; unfolding in a way that is compelling and joyous to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed Sweet Air’s ability to be fun and complex in story. Both actors did a great job in finding the simplicity in their moments. Newton Mayenge is charming and engaging as Galen. Jenni Chiramonte is quirky and lovely as Robbie. Matt Morillo’s writing is playful and grounded from beginning to end, bringing out the wiles of New York City. This is a gem of a ... full review

SWEET AIR is a funny and adorable duo show about the truths we’re willing to share and the moments we’re ready to reveal them. You’ll enjoy both characters as individuals and as a pair as they slowly show more of who they are—if they start out stiff, they warm up to the audience as they warm up to one another. I love stories about strangers, and this show has a lot of fun playing with the social rules we use to create distance from one another in order to inch its characters closer together.... full review
