What I liked
I think the best part of the play is how Bobby’s struggle to win his mother’s acceptance as a dancer parallels his own journey to accept his own sexuality, as well as his relationship with Tomas. I also really enjoyed watching the dancing! The Flamenco inspired choreography compliments the fiery physicality building between Bobby and Tomas! Also gotta hand it to the actress playing Uma, the mom! Her performance really captures the layered tenderness for her children under her hardened exterior. I could feel the giant heart under the armor. If I couldn’t, I wouldn’t have found her scenes as compelling!
What I didn't like
I think having more streamlined dialogue can really help this play shine! Sometimes it sounded like the actors were given dialogue that’s very wordy, which sometimes took me out of it. This is especially true in the play’s climax, and Bobby lashes out at Tomas after their dance recital. I think less words can be much more!
My overall impression
This show is dripping with sexual tension between the two leads, which creates the right kind of intrigue; will they end up together? Will Bobby acknowledge his feelings and his true sexuality? These were the questions that kept me focuses on the story. I figured there would be a happy ending, but the journey is where the juicy revelation is at-and this play delivers!
