I think there’s something to be said for your experience with live theater. You always want to feel something, leave with an impression, and the performers and creators want this for you as well. This can often be a half step removed from needing to reveal some grand truth or exploring trauma, but that’s not always necessary. Sometimes you just want to enjoy yourself and you want to see everyone else doing the same.
I have had more memorable dining experiences than I need, but I’m grateful for them all. That said, perhaps my most memorable time experiencing a new restaurant came when I was around 20 years old, and my small friend group ended up at this Italian restaurant in Venice Beach. I’ll never forget it, because the whole thing felt like a fun fever dream. Staff was singing, a packed restaurant was clapping and laughing, and the staff practically pelted us with the most uneven looking garlic knots that were so delicious I almost convinced myself I was hallucinating. It felt like we walked in normal, everyone went temporarily insane, and we drove home with a stomach full of carbs unsure of what had just happened. The experience didn’t need to be refined, it just had to be fun and more importantly, shared and authentic.
I’ve had a very long week at the time of writing this. Enchanted Silverware was just what I needed. Very well attended, a hilarious and so simple you don’t know why you didn’t think of it first premise, and a cast who just put everything into delivering a great time shared by everyone in attendance. They were enjoying it, and as a result we were enjoying it, and in turn they enjoyed it all the more. It was funny, it was genuine, and I feel like everyone left having enjoyed themselves. What more could you ask from a Friday night theater experience?
Probably garlic knots. But not much else.
What I didn't like
What could be improved? Don’t fix what isn’t broken. People had fun, let that be enough.
