What I liked

The smallpox (true) tale is brilliantly told. Ditto Lady M’s experience in the Sultan’s harem. Surface projects with flair. Lady M’s up-and-down relationship with Alexander Pope, on literati side. Then in a flash she’s enacting the sultry, exotic Sultana. Then languid, dark doings in Venice. Punctuated by switching back to the dying Lady M giving context in a creaky but still indomitable voice.

What I didn't like

The feather boa started shedding! The occasional snarky voice-over narrations didn’t work well. Nor did some modern witticisms — e.g. “ALM… Aristos Lives Matter.”

My overall impression

Thesy Surface dramatizes Lady Montagu’s astonishing life with wit, insight, and above all, a seemingly boundless energy.
