I really loved seeing how you wove all these stories together into one cohesive narrative. The arc flowed so well, and I could really see how each piece connected to the next. The flashbacks and the moments you chose to highlight were really strong, and I thought the pacing felt natural and grounded throughout.
I especially loved the act-outs—when you used the stool, your movement, the lighting shifts—it added a whole theatrical layer that really elevated the storytelling. Those moments brought a lot of energy and visual texture to the show. They stood out in a great way.
What I didn't like
Such a great show!
My overall impression
A Real Man is a really heartfelt and funny solo show from Frank Traynor. I’ve seen Frank tell stories all over LA—at The Moth, at his show It’s Funny Now—and it was so cool to see how some of those stories came together in this larger arc. There’s something really powerful about how he wove it all into one narrative that touches on masculinity, grief, family, and figuring out who you are.
What makes Frank stand out in storytelling is his ability to take moments that could be really sad or heavy and find the humor in them. And not in a way that dismisses the pain—but in a way that invites the audience to laugh with him. You can feel the tension in the room sometimes, and then the release that comes with that laughter. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.
It’s a personal story, but one that touches on really universal themes—identity, family dynamics, generational pressure, and the search for authenticity. I’m really glad I got to see it.
