So much about this production was admirable. The textual pruning was exceptionally thoughtful and judicious. The minimalist staging was lively and evocative. Best of all were the actors, whose delivery of Shakespeare’s language was flawless and showed both the actors’ profound understanding of what they were saying and the director’s thorough comprehension of Shakespearean language and verse. As a Shakespeare academic, I can say that this production was a pleasure and a privilege to witness.
What I didn't like
Absolutely nothing could have been improved! Flawless production. I hope it can find a wider audience some day.
My overall impression
An excellent, streamlined production of a rarely performed Shakespeare play. Even though “Edward III” has been accepted as canon for over thirty years, this play is seldom even studied, let alone performed. Kudos to The Porters of Hellsgate for including it in their Herculean task of performing all of Shakespeare’s plays!
