My overall impression
This is a truly extraordinary production of Edward III. All of the cast shine, especially since they’re carrying a show in a blackbox theater without a set. King Edward III and the Countess of Salisbury in particular absolutely stole the show – some of the best Shakespearean acting I’ve seen in a long while. The costuming and lighting are understated but work well. Ultimately the script is weak in places, through no fault of the players (this acting company, The Porters of Hellsgate, are trying to stage all of Shakespeare, so I can’t even fault them on their selection of play – they have to do them all!). They’ve tightened it up in places in a way that I appreciate though, and really highlighted the strengths of the script, particularly in the first and second acts.
