The performances! Really appreciated Dad’s performance on the video too. Given the fantastic nature of what he was laying out, the actor made it feel very natural and the plausible, and added a knowing sense of irony and humor in his reading that was really effective.
What I didn't like
I didn’t realize until today that all three replies show up under our reviews (I saw “this will be published as your summary” on the first, so I assumed reviews would only show the first!), so -SPOILERALERT!!!!!
SPOILERALERT* — Just a idea — by the time we get to Dad’s recording, we definitely know who Alice was because she’s been talked about by name quite often, but I’m not sure the living sisters had referred to each other by name enough that I couldn’t recall who was who as Dad laid out his indictment. So I had to wait until after the recording to flesh out which of the two sisters he was suggesting was trying to cause him harm. Could be intentional? (In which case, well done!) But if not, maybe another moment or two when they refer to each other by name – maybe when they argue? – might help. And note — this didn’t affect my enjoyment of the play at all!
My overall impression
Trunk is an excellent play that packs more than a couple twisted punches into its tight one-hour run time. A trio of excellent performances lead what opens as a family drama into some dark and surprising territories. No spoilers here — buy a ticket, take the ride! Highly recommended!
