The Peacock in the Rubble is one of the most quietly powerful and emotionally honest shows of the Fringe. Written and performed by Marissa Rutka, this solo piece is a heartfelt journey through childhood, mental health, and unimaginable loss—told with grace, humor, and remarkable vulnerability.
Rutka opens her heart to the audience, recounting her experiences growing up with OCD and the trauma of losing her family home in the devastating California wildfire of January 2025. Her storytelling is grounded and refreshingly sincere, weaving personal anecdotes with home video clips that add warmth and authenticity. The result is a deeply personal coming-of-age narrative that feels both intimate and universally resonant.
As an actress, Marissa Rutka is a revelation- charming, open, and compelling from the first moment to the last. Her ability to balance levity with sorrow, and resilience with rawness, makes this performance unforgettable. The final moments land with a quiet force that is nothing short of breathtaking.
This is storytelling at its most honest. Peacock in a Rubble doesn’t just touch the heart, it stays there.
Highly recommended. An absolute gem of the fringe.
