One thing that stood out was the use of music. I think having the music, particularly paired with the journal entries, heightened the experience a lot. Additionally the choices of journal entry pairings were exquisite.
What I didn't like
I wonder if there’s any merit to flipping the order of the final journal entry monologue and the magic trick? I like the magic trick. I just felt so connected to you by the end, and I think I wanted it to end with you and your story more than a magic trick about an audience member’s dreams.
My overall impression
This sprawling story masterfully ties together heartfelt journal entries, a hilarious Titanic parody, and several magic tricks into a tightly crafted commentary on youth, dreams, and the obstacles that stand in our way. Mallie McCown shines in a highly technical, wildly imaginative, and strikingly vulnerable performance you have to see to fully comprehend. The production is one of the most ambitious I’ve seen, but miraculously through the chaos and countless props and costume pieces Mallie sticks the landing in a truly delightful Fringe show.
