I did not expect the serious turn the show took but it totally worked and was a wonderful showcase for a gifted performer as well as an moving example of the power that wonderful art can have to allow people to escape their lives. I’ll leave it at that so as to not provide any spoilers.
And I must give credit for the clever and creative way the low-budget and constraints of the Fringe format were used to the advantage of the show to provide a funny yet effective dramatization of the ship sinking.
What I didn't like
Perhaps in a full run with a larger budget more can be done prop/set wise but it’s terrific as is.
My overall impression
This was a terrific show in every single way. Mallie McCown is a dynamic performer who commands the stage and takes this show to places you really do not see coming. She shifts from hilarious spoof to heartfelt drama on a dime and does something with a solo show that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen. Dylan George provides stellar supporting work providing magic and…special effects.
