The subtle, nuanced film style acting was truthful and earnest. The staging just using chairs and ladders that defined time and place. The detailed costumes that layered time and space and attitudes of the time were well thought out.
What I didn't like
The script adaptation uses moments from the novel “and then they said” or “and so I turned and said” within framework of dialogue. I personally thought I could close my eyes and listen to a very imaginative podcast. Allowing my own vision of what was happening. Yet, I was watching a well rehearsed and visually engaging performances as well. Those two aspects fought against each other and throughout play for me.
My overall impression
I was excited to see this adaptation as the sci-fi source material is on my top ten list. It is clear that the actors were experienced and talented, beautifully blocked and almost seamlessly executed. As well as the commitment to costume design, use of minimalist chairs and ladder to elevate the blocking and high end puppet work. However, though I tried to like it I just didn’t engage with it.
