What I liked
The cast of this show played off the guest actor impeccably, and the format of the performance allowed for emergent humor and whimsical fun in a way that a lot of other performance formats struggle to reach. The meta-humor addressing the issues of the “play within the play” and how it was slowly going wrong had me in stitches. I truly hope performances in this format catch on and this one is the perfect blueprint for how to do it right.
What I didn't like
One downside of this performance format is introducing the weakness of inconsistency. The chaos and frenetic energy is a strong boon to the show, but does inevitably fray some of the shows tightness. Some jokes ended up being missed in the chaos, the timing for some things weren’t as precise as they could be, but this was a cost the director willingly paid to make this format work and I believe it stuck the landing.
My overall impression
Decided to watch despite reading a review saying “Definitely one to miss” and I am extremely glad I did not listen!
What I was met with was a charming and hilarious performance in an experimental format that took incredible finesse and talent to land properly, and the cast and director delivered.
