This review is for the 6/14 – 10pm performance. I will be updating this review after I watch the show again.
Christian Levatino is unlike anything theatre artist I’ve ever met. The work he is able to do within days would be simply impossible within the time frame for most writers – some might even take years or a lifetime to accomplish what Levatino can do with less than a week. Incredible.
This is the fourth play I’ve seen from Mr. Levatino and it appears to be his most personable yet. Instead of a snapshot into American History, we are given a story about love, loss, and the yearning for real human connection.
The script is filled with intelligent, beautiful dialogue. Each character has so much depth and nuance – they live and breathe on the stage and we are blessed to get a glimpse of their complicated lives for a brief moment in time.
All the acting is truthful, grounded, and sincere. Directing is sharp. Love the constructed set piece and…. LIGHTING. Dammit, every time I see a Gangbusters show I am reminded of specific theatrical conventions and tricks that are grossly underutilized – myself included.
This is theatre for people who love theatre executed by insanely talented artists. This is theatre, refined.
I can’t wait to see the next show, as with all of Mr. Levatino’s shows, these fringe performances are workshop productions and all scenes/dialogue are subject to change between performances. Will update after next viewing where I will probably have a whole lot more to say.
