The delightful and indulgent PARIS + JULIET brings clownery to another level, a kind of experimental masterclass in character-driven solo performance. The charming Charlie Day hits every beat while still being flexible enough to engage actively with the audience as his ridiculous reimagining of Romeo & Juliet’s oft-forgotten fiancé, Paris.
The nature of Paris as a character allows for some decadence and excess in the writing—and Charlie carries Paris’s ponderings with grace, covering lust and love gained and lost, envy, a sexless society, existential fear, death, and legacy all in one 60 minute sprint of a laugh-out-loud show. In addition to sensory overload (thanks, Paris) I left feeling genuinely inspired.
