A powerfully acted production that not only thoroughly rips America's garbage healthcare system a new one, but allows me to feel a certain type of way so that I laugh-so-I-don't-cry but also cry-so-I-wanna-do-something. Does that make sense? No? Well, Termination Fee does make a heck of a lot of sense. The jokes are poignant, relatable, and relevant to the moment. The timelessness struck me, because some lines felt almost like they could have been written just that morning, months ago, or 10 years prior. Glad I slept on it before I reviewed - this slice of life hit way way deeper than I expected! Smartly written, grounded but crackling performances. The easy reproire w/ the leads almost mask the disillusion, discontent, frustration that rumbles beneath the surface. Something deeply stupid/sad/absurd about having to stay married for health insurance. So much so that it almost felt 'reasonable' for Neil to make the decision he made. What?? Termination Fee really pulled me in. It kept me guessing the whole way through. I laughed a lot, but it also hit some tough, uncomfortable truths about how messed up the health care system is in this country. It definitely made my blood boil at times. Thankfully, it found its way to a hopeful ending, which was a relief. The writing and direction by Ron Placone and Sara Kay Godot kept everything moving and grounded.
