There’s been so much thought put into every little detail. Truly feels like a labor of love. An incredible balancing act by the cast and crew and some brilliant physical performances.
What I didn't like
I do worry it lacks specificity as satire. I think adding a little earnestness to the play in play itself might fix this. Right now it feels like a parody of a parody, which hinders it from truly becoming great in a couple places. But by the final ten minutes, I think it nails it.
My overall impression
Very funny and layered satire that made great use of a kind of odd space. This felt like the love child of the “Thanksgiving Play” by Larissa Fasthorse and the anti-comedy of Tim Heidecker. Often the funniest moments don’t elicit laughs. Just wide eyed shock. Also as with all meta theater, it was helped by external circumstances. Everyone reacted to jokes differently. I was sitting behind kids who did NOT understand the concept or recursive theater. It was awesome.
