The things I loved about ‘This Is Water’, include:
•the video clips from the 70’s (which met my needs for nostalgia & comfort), and the ‘schoolhouse rock’ throwback.
•the alter-ego ‘muse’ (which gifted me with curiosity, fun & play), and the phone-calls (both as scene changers & present-moment nervous-system resetters)
•the painfully-beautiful history lessons (including e.o. 9066, the lady of the harbor’s french shackles & g.i. bill/red-lining)
•the music, the songs and the asymmetrical visual effects.
*in a world that often times pretends that love, understanding, support, acknowledgement & visibility AREN’T essential human requirements, TIW does all of the above. And as a higher shade of brown, american of african-ancestry (who grew up post civil-rights/pre 9-11 to parents who climbed #MeToo, #TakeAKnee & Stonewall mountains, on the way to pre civil-rights PhD’s), TIW empathically helps me put into perspective their unbelievably impossible journeys (while shining a painfully needed light of empathy on those who caused them harm). Thank you, Rain, Kim, Lily, Yohuru & crew🙏🏾
