My overall impression
Let Me Out is wonderful. The characters are well developed, finding out little bits and pieces of their secrets over the course of the evening… was a nicely subtle way to carry the story forward. I want to know these characters- I want to be friends with them.
I enjoyed the playfulness and the joy the characters had with each other. It was a lot of drinking and drugs but, I was a college kid once, it was a lot of drinking and drugs! I wouldn’t want to bring my teenage nephews to this play but it felt very true and honest to the time and place in these characters lives.
I walked in a little worried about a 2 hour run time at the Fringe and ya know what? I never once felt like it lagged- it clipped along with beautiful emotional slow downs where it was appropriate.
I sincerely enjoyed myself and I loved that it was a personal story- it tugged my heart strings- it isn’t a fantasy- or an imaginary “what if”. It is the story of a young man who turned out okay and now makes art. How beautiful is that?
Honestly, I think the play could have benefited from a better light plot I, for one, will be looking for what comes next from this playwright.
