Review by SHARI BARRETT

June 12, 2013 broadway world los angeles

My overall impression

The show stars Anastasia Barnes as Ruby Besler who shares the story of her life through bawdy tales from her birth through the loss of her first love to achieving success on stage.

Although Ruby is definitely the star of the show, she is by no means alone on stage. There’s pianist Dorothy Diamond (portrayed by musical director Gere Fennelly) and also her dancers, The Rubies (Tatiana Giannoutsos, Regan Carrington, Laurel Vecsey, and choreographer Flame Cynders, all from the Fishnet Follies Classic Burlesque Revue).

There’s no nudity here, however. There are elements of burlesque conveying the glamorous, feminine, retro sexuality of the period: Somewhat naughty, but not lurid.

The show suffered from the heat inside the Elephant Space, and poor Ms. Barnes was drenched in sweat halfway through the show, perhaps causing her to lose her place and skip around her lines a bit. But the choreography is fun, if a bit under-rehearsed, and the humor certainly is for adults only.

Very cute bits with graphics by Ms. Violet Ruby.
