“On the Boulevard” is the modern re-telling of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” (which was later adapted into “My Fair Lady”). This time, instead of an Edwardian London flower girl learning to speak and act like a lady with the help of an expert phonetician, an American gay Midwest country bumpkin learns to become a hunky Hollywood actor worthy of superhero movies with the help of a celebrity personal fitness trainer. This full-length musical combines LGBT themes with Hollywood politics, self-esteem, and what it means to learn to love yourself, and someone else, all hosted by a fabulous Black drag queen and taking place “On the Boulevard” of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, the historic “Rainbow District” in the shadow of the Hollywood sign.
