As someone who notices little things having multiple actors continuing on stage gives me plenty to watch. I appreciate all the small details, how the different characters react depending who’s in the stand and how they interact with each other. They don’t have to have lines just the way they present themselves gives each character more depth and allows us (the audience) to get to know them more.
A few of my favorite interactions is between Sigmund Freud and El-Fayoumy. The comedic tension between the two that makes me want to know what the history of their relationship and how they came about to have such a tenacious standing. Freud was definitely my favorite character out of them all, he may have been arrogant and cocky but damn he had my attention from the moment he walked out in that stunning brown suit to his smooth jaunt off stage. He was so calm and strategic with his answers and he had the German accent!! Very proud of him for taking on that challenge to add that bit of flavor to his character. One of my other favorites was between the Judge and the Bailiff. I loved how the Bailiff was a man for the people and even got his time to shine in the judge set. They also had moments where he would fan the Judge and fix her gavel when it would break… Another favorite interaction was between Satan and Cunningham. He really went at her and made me want to cry and go give Cunningham a hug cause she was crying. Satan was beautiful, sassy, and charming.
What I didn't like
I know it is a trial but I’d like there to be more involvement between those on the stand and the two attorneys (Cunningham and El-Fayoumy) like how we saw between Freud and El-Fayoumy, Cunningham and Satan, El-Fayoumy and Mother Teresa.
I wish Judas was up on the stage instead of hanging off the side. If there was more space between the front row and the audience it would be fine, but there isn’t enough room here and I worry someone may try to reach out and touch him.
There was a clip of Judas and Satan that I felt went on for a bit too long and nothing was really happening.
I also wish the audience wouldn’t walk across the stage, maybe if there was an intermission it may help with this. I know you can’t control everyone but it is a bit tight quarters in there so maybe suggest for people to use restrooms prior to show start or try to wait til after.
My overall impression
First off I’d like to congratulate all the amazing talent that have worked hard to make this show happen! Favorite characters I feel you should look out for because they made me laugh and cry are Sigmund Freud, Bailiff, and Satan. Of course Cunningham and El-Fayoumy were captivating as well.
Even if you aren’t religious or read the Bible I would definitely recommend people to come watch and support all these actors who are sure to entertain you with this take of “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot”!
