The Harry and Sam Dialogues

I am a huge fan of theatre that gets you thinking and questioning the experience, characters and subject matter presented. And I find myself, even after so many hours, still thinking about this fine production and just what reality was really being presented. I couldn't see what was written on the stage, I couldn't see what Jeff was doing since I was sitting on the steps, I couldn't always tell what their pantomiming indicated, but none of that mattered to me. The actors definitely did their research and had chemistry with the story and each other! Their back and forth dialogue was well-crafted and relatable and there was always a story behind the words in their eyes. In regards to their movements, yes it was very precise and purposeful, but I would say that a few times it felt deliberate (pacing back and forth, transitioning sometimes). What was beautiful about this show was the exploration of the unique and resilient relationship between Harry and Sam. The rhythm of the relationship was so specifically used that it not only led to the humorous and quirky moments that these two friends share but the slowing down of the dialogue was charged with deep seeded issues that were not completely being confronted by the characters until their relationship unraveled towards the end. It was so enjoyable to see these two guys tackling certain philosophical issues in very funny and charming ways but I could feel that they were both skating on the surface of a deeper loneliness and seeing them deal with it and try to open up to each other about it was so engaging. The acting was all right. It got saved by a script that was solid. The conversations of two men, often getting into hypotheticals, seems like it wouldn't make for a watchable show, but it definitely does. I would say definitely check it out. If, for nothing else, the great dialogue the script creates. However, the acting left something to be desired. It felt more like two guys saying lines than two characters conversing.... full review

Very thought provoking. I loved the technique of having the older characters write words on the chalkboard before each "dialogue". It made me very curious as to what would happen next. I greatly appreciated how this show helped me to evaluate for myself what friendship, forgiveness, and time will heal. I felt engaged throughout the entire show although at moments some bits of dialogue were lost due to speaking too quickly or dropping words here and there. That being said, some of those speech patterns added to the character development of Harry and Sam who were quirky, relatable, and truthful. (so I didn't find it bothering me too much!) A brief, yet impressionable piece that asks that difficult question of how to forgive and how to aid one another as we grow. Go see it! ... full review

The strength of this show is it's specificity. Director Matt Fauls has done a great job of crafting a specific aesthetic vision for the show and obviously worked with his actors a lot on that specificity. Handling invisible props can be tricky, but I think it worked here due to the actors' commitment to that convention. I could feel the history and familiarity in the relationship between Harry and Sam. I enjoyed the script and the unique way of story-telling a lot. The subtext was very strong, and true to life. The slow dramatic build was great, but needs a greater pay-off at the climax. The climax and ending were a little bit confusing, or unsatisfying. This show is an interesting piece. At times like a parfait, others like an onion, the layers of conversation, language, and direction make for an overall wonderful theatre experience. The actors had very clear and familiar relationships with each other, and the space worked (for the most part) well for this intimate show (as it is an intimate look at their relationship). Due to the nature of this show being, well, dialogue heavy, it is testament to the actors to keep the energy and engagement high. About 3/4 the way through, it seemed to dip a bit, but it was picked up marvelously by transition into the inspired casting of older Harry and Sam.
