I like the the simplicity of the staging to allow for maximum attention to the realistic dialogue and themes of the show. I enjoyed the relatability, the moments of levity, as well as the more palpable tender moments of vulnerability. I also liked hearing Chinese on stage in LA! Loved both Dominique and Candice’s performances! And the HR character needs her own show!
What I didn't like
I wanted to see the voice actors! (But I understand that this was a two person play).
My overall impression
Expatriated is a thoughtful commentary on the discrepancy of the immigrant/expat experience based on race, on a global scale. The message is important, the character arcs are moving and relatable, and the post-show conversations are impactful to say the least.
