I loved the way she wove her original music and songs into this very soulful and funny coming-of-age story. That seemed wholly original, and I think will continue to make her stand out in a crowded comedy/theater scene. I also thought this was a fresh and interesting lens on our 24-news cycle, and whether it is dulling us to pain, or causing us to absorb too much of it. I also love that this performance is (in a very satisfying way) the happy ending to the narrative.
What I didn't like
I had a moment of confusion at the end that it was her interviewing someone else for this new agency she’d started, I thought at first she was being interviewed. And in the scene meeting the three tampons… the staging was slightly awkward sitting and looking left and right to indicate which character was speaking, I would look at a different way to portray that because I kept losing the thread of who was speaking. But the Minnesota song was a beautiful way of handling an intimate conversation between two people where I was totally clear who was speaking.
My overall impression
I love this, and loved her. She is a very gifted storyteller (and musician!), and she covered a lot of territory in an hour. This show made me laugh and think… and also made me ache with memories of 911 and how we all processed it. But it wasn’t only about 911, it was a thoroughly fresh, honest, and specific charting of a young artist’s life in NYC that I think will be relatable to people of all ages.
