The acting was incredible, all the way around. Allison Youngberg, especially, gave an outstanding performance! For much of it, I wondered if it was improvised because it was so raw and unspooled so naturally (though I don’t think it was! It just had a lovely spontaneous quality). I loved how I had no idea what was going to happen from one minute to the next, and how the time flew by. Before I knew it, the show was over. Always a great sign in the theater.
What I didn't like
I don’t have any ideas on how to improve the piece. It was economically done. There was one part that was extremely repetitious but it successfully raised the tension, so it worked really well! No notes.
My overall impression
An entertaining, affecting play that took me on a rollercoaster of emotions.
I walked into this show knowing nothing about it except that I casually know the playwright and had me some of the actors. It’s about a celebrated musician (the titular Norman Judd) who’s been out of the spotlight for many years, coming back to perform, spurred on by an avid — perhaps too avid — fan who joins him onstage, along with the musician’s less successful daughter. Not to post spoilers, I’ll just say the piece was hilarious, thought-provoking, sad, sweet and ultimately so poignant. I’m so glad I saw it!
