This Is My Garbage

Cabaret & Variety · wordspace · Ages 7+ · 55 mins · United States of America

A musical romp through a lot of trash!
June 9th-12:30pm; June 17th-5:00pm, June 24th-9:30pm
June 26th 5:00pm, June 30th- 9:30pm    TMIG looks at all the garbage, rubbish, & refuse (in the garage or closet, or in our heads) thatcrowds our days…I mean, we all got some —right? In this wild hour, BV dives into what it takes to live and what it means to have all the stuff that comes along with dance. The big question is “Who’s really responsible? And what subversive insanity will it take to create a (relatively) sustainable world?”
While getting serious, you can sing along with the garbage, get the ‘space alien’ perspective, meet some ants and medieval shakers, get a taste of “planned obsolescence” (with a Mad Man spin) and join Varda as she dives into a big pile of…of stuff.

Really, how many pieces of trash does it take to bury all the humans?  Just kidding.

#climatechange, #environment, #oil&plastic, #neurogarbage, #change

Review of the Original Show (Pre-Covid) at the Semele Festival:

Somewhere beyond the Hollywood Fringe, between Off-Broadway and the Bermuda Triangle lies the wit and wisdom of Brenda Varda.
She’s a one Woman Revolution. Writer, Actress, Composer, Lyricist and Raconteur.
She takes on complex topics (like Garbage) with the adept agility and playful precision of a cat toying with its dinner.
Varda has the heart and vocal prowess of Carol Burnett, a bitingly wry, piercingly dry Lily Tomlin like wit, and a Tracy Ulman fearlessness to dig in deep —to the point of immersion.
With the nimble light-footed assuredness of a gypsy – wielding a wheeled garbage-can, adorned in cover-alls and chucks, Varda sweeps onto stage like a breath of fresh air.
Soon the lighthearted music is dominated by a list of consumables. A monotone drone listing of what we must own at an ever-increasing pace.
Varda becomes a whirlwind of consumption. The track is relentless and the consumables are endless, the pace is frenetic—until finally—Varda is a Tornado— consumed by its consumption.
“So Many Things, So Little Time.”
And so it begins.
Varda takes us on a musical stream-of-consciousness tour that begins in her Garage, travels to her Minnesota Immigrant/Depression Era DNA roots, a “Wasters Anonymous” Recovery Group meeting, a History of Garbage from Ants, to Egypt, Outer Space Alien investment opportunities, and ultimately the cosmic reality of being and stuff.
It is at once insightful and delightful. Mischievousness but not Maliciousness. Like a TED TALK-ER-ETTA on Broadway. Conscious raising and toe-tapping. Go!
