I can’t say enough great things about this show! Co-written by Sidney Edwards and Byron Coolie, this one-man show starring Coolie is truly delightful from beginning to end- no album skips necessary. The way Byron so effortlessly flows between the hilarious characters of his story makes you forget, if even for a second, that he’s the only person on stage. From the meticulously placed props and costumes, to the use of projections and voiceovers, this theatrical masterpiece proves that you can do ALOT with a little. The show’s writing & acting styles demonstrate the ability to not only take something already funny and make it funnier, but also to pull out the gut wrenching emotions that come with the Black, male experience. Just when they’ve disarmed you with humor, you’re quickly reminded of the dark reality of America’s history that infiltrates every aspect of society, even the theatre industry. As someone who used to be an avid theatre goer that got out of practice, TYT5 was the perfect return to in-person theatre that reminded me why it’s such a critical part of our culture. Make the time to support this amazing show. You won’t regret it.
