What I liked
I loved the use of the puppet and just every genius way that Melanie created the world around her (using the audience, the voiceover, even playing other people). I also really leaned in to the repetition of themes like the moon and her unwavering positivity. It was real, it was raw, it was hilarious and at no point did I want it to end.
What I didn't like
I’m not sure there’s anything that I could offer. Maybe sharpening the thesis of the end – I understood her viewpoint of being special doesn’t make you you, being you does, but perhaps there could be a little more to that?
My overall impression
This show had me gripped from the moment Melanie appeared onstage. It was wonderfully vulnerable, hilarious, quirky, and fantastical. Melanie mixes blind optimism and her deepest fears into one wild, fun, heart wrenching 50 minute show. I laughed, I cried, I related deeply to the topic. It was one of those shows where you could feel the entire audience was hanging on to every single word.
